# Ask a Bilingual Expert

Raising a bilingual child? On this page, our very own Director of Learning Design and Efficacy, Sophia Espinoza, addresses some of the most common questions, concerns, and curiosities around the benefits of bilingualism.

### Benefits of Bilingualism (FAQs):

1. **Any advice on managing two Spanish dialects in the household? Does this cause confusion for kids?**
It’s common for families with different Spanish dialects to expose their children to various vocabulary and cultural nuances. This exposure helps children communicate across cultures and enriches their language skills.

2. **What do you recommend if I’m not completely fluent?**
Use the Spanish you know, and don't worry about perfect fluency. Fill the gaps through apps and books. The Canticos App is an excellent resource for learning and engaging in Spanish.

3. **Do you recommend teaching different subjects in different languages?**
Yes, it’s beneficial for children to learn specific subjects in their second language. This approach gives them a chance to learn vocabulary not covered in everyday conversation.

4. **We speak Spanish and English in our home, but my child responds in English. How can I encourage her to speak more Spanish?**
Encourage her gently to respond in Spanish without pressure. Provide positive reinforcement and introduce more Spanish resources to spark interest.

5. **Should I set aside time for each language or mix them together?**
Make language learning enjoyable by integrating both languages naturally into your child’s daily life.

6. **What are the cognitive benefits of bilingualism?**
Bilingualism enhances executive functions such as focus, self-control, and working memory.

7. **What are some common misconceptions about raising bilingual children?**
Some believe learning two languages confuses children, while the reality is that they are developing proficiency in each language.

8. **What are some strategies for raising bilingual children?**
Start early, stick with it, and make it joyful to foster an enduring interest in both languages.
